It’s been hovering in the upper 90s here in Atlanta, and weather like this makes me crave ice cream like no other. This year, I’m on the hunt for my favorite vegan ice cream! The plan is to try new pints each week and share my findings right here. I know, it’s a tough life I’ve got.

This week’s pick was a suggestion from my pal Rachael who works at the local co-op. It turns out they carry Living Harvest’s Tempt, a hemp-based ice cream. Hemp! I was pretty excited to try this one. Hemp is really excellent for you. It’s packed with essential fatty acids and all nine amino acids. On top of the superfood base, this ice cream is soy- and gluten- free, too! I felt pretty good about myself when I picked out a pint of chocolate fudge Tempt and served up a generous bowl after dinner. So what’s the scoop?

The Stats

  • Ingredients: Hempmilk (Filtered Water, Whole Hemp Nut [Shelled Hemp Seed], Rice Solids), Organic Sugar, Organic Tapioca Solids, Organic Sunflower And/Or Safflower Oil, Organic Chocolate Base (Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa [Processed With Alkali], Natural Flavor, Sunflower Lecithin [Emulsifier]), Organic Fudge Ripple (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Water, Organic Cocoa [Processed With Alkali], Organic Tapioca Starch, Natural Vanilla, Salt, Carrageenan), Organic Cocoa, Organic Agave Inulin, Organic Tapioca Starch, Sunflower Lecithin [Emulsifier]), Sea Salt, Organic Locust Bean Gum, Organic Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carrageenan, Natural Flavor
  • Calories per 1/2 cup: 200
  • Total fat per 1/2 cup: 11g
  • Total saturated fat per 1/2 cup: 1.5g
  • Total fiber per 1/2 cup: 2g
  • 1/2 cup contains: 6% of your iron (based on a 2000 calorie diet)
  • Price: $3.69 per pint

The Verdict
That is some ingredient list! Just like the
Organic Rice Supreme, though, this is due in part to the flavor I picked. The fudge swirl pretty much doubles the ingredients. Check out the Tempt vanilla bean flavor’s nutritional information to see what I mean.

Despite being a bit lower in fat than some of the other varieties I’ve tried, this stuff was rich! It was sort of tough to scoop straight out of the freezer, but a few minute out on the counter softened things right up. It had a deep, chocolaty flavor and was nice and a creamy texture. There was sort of a faint aftertaste. It reminded me a bit of a soy product in that respect. The taste wasn’t necessarily bad, just distinct. It certainly didn’t stop me from serving up a second helping!

I’m pretty intrigued by their coffee biscotti flavor. Have any of you tried that one? It was a tough call between the chocolate fudge and that one!

Living Harvest makes hemp milks, ice creams, and protein powders. They also have a line of hemp nuts and oils. You can shop for some of their products on the Living Harvest website, though they don’t sell their ice creams online. To find a store that carries Tempt, check out their store locator!

  1. Yumm vegan ice cream. I had a reallllly good vegan ice cream at a Raw restaurant near me recently…I would like to see if I could find something similar. The restaurant sold it by the pint… but it was $20 a pint…ouch.

  2. The Tempt Coffee Biscotti was the first flavor I tried as I love coffee flavor. But, until they find a way to keep the biscotti bits crispy I don’t think I will have it again. I’d also prefer a more classic (read non-chocolate) biscotti (though chocolate covered would be okay).

However, I did try the Lime Coconut just a couple days ago. Not usually a flavor I would look twice at even though I really like lime (not lemon) and coconut. It’s is really creamy! So good. It’s my new favorite flavor of all frozen prepared desserts.

I had a raw ice cream last month too. It is spendy but the ingredients make it well worth it (and it is a treat after all — it would cost more to get a couple scoops at Ben & Jerry’s and those aren’t organic or even as conscientious). I have to say the raw stuff was very, very good.

But I do still love the Larry & Luna’s Coconut Bliss. I was eating L&L stuff before I went veg. Such lovely flavor. They raised the bar for everyone. The mint galactica is sublime but their other flavors are great too. Miss the one with lavender (another flavor I would be unlikely to try until given a sample). The thing about L&L’s is that a little bit seems to be very satisfying so a pint lasts longer in the freezer unlike other frozen treats where a bite just makes us want another.

As to the ingredient list on the Tempt product. While it may be long, those are more thoughtful ingredients than the average treat. Have you seen the list on the Tofutti Cuties? Those are more corn-based than soy-based, neither of which seem to be organic so likely GMO.

  3. Kate – You might check out the Ice Supreme brand! It’s not 100% raw, but I believe they try to use raw ingredients where they can.

Zucchini Breath – Thanks for the recipe! I’ve been coveting some vegan soft serve and don’t know anywhere around here that does it.

Penne – That’s good to know about the chocolate biscotti flavor! And you’re so right…those Tofutti cuties are full of mystery ingredients, though I’ll admit that they’re one of my guilty pleasure treats.

  4. I really need to admit that a majority of the web data arena seems similar to that of a home of mirrors in conditions of discovering certainty. There's a great deal of so called honest data floating about out there but from our valuable experience it seems like it is a lot of the same rubbish. I had been scouting for opt-in data that I'll get started with for inbox promotions in a few selected market sectors but what i've received all ready appear to be it was obviously gathered off of web pages. So many information sites available are warm and friendly but I look and feel dizzy just attempting to sort all through all the content articles of decent data.
