Not too long ago, Jeannie shared a great recipe for mulled wine. It was great timing, since I was planning a New Year’s Eve party and wanted something warm, boozy, and spicy that folks could sip by the fire.

I’m the kind of cook that can’t just leave a recipe alone, though. Sure, Jeannie’s recipe looked delicious, but since I had to scale it up anyway, I made a few other changes, and it was a total hit! The holidays may be over, but the cold weather is far from finished, and a crock pot full of mulled wine is a great, comforting drink for the next time you have some guests over for dinner or board games.

Since we were expecting a nice turnout, this recipe uses three bottles of wine. If you’re expecting fewer folks, you can cut it down to one or two bottles, just reduce the other ingredients by the same ratio, and you’re all set!

Mulled Wine

1 tangerine
1 lime
1 lemon
3 bottles of cheap wine
3/4c vegan white sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
2oz white rum

3T mulling spices (you can find pre-mixed mulling spices at Williams-Sonoma or Penzy’s)

Slice your citrus into pretty rounds and place them into a small crock pot, then add all of the other ingredients, except for the mulling spices.

Spoon the mulling spices into a tea ball and float it in the wine mixture.

Turn the crock pot on high for 30 minutes, then switch it to low. As long as there’s liquid in the crock pot, you’re cool to leave it on. Make sure you remember to turn it off at the end of the night!

    1. Your story reminds me of my sister recounting her first time making mulled wine and ending up with “a crock pot full of spiced vinegar.” Sounds like you fared better than she did, thankfully!
