Oregon’s GMO labeling law may be kaput for now, but in Vermont the shopper’s right to know is still a possibility. The Vermont Right to Know GMOs Coalition sent out a press release this morning announcing that tomorrow morning Burlington’s Federal District court “will be hearing the first oral arguments on Vermont’s landmark GMO labeling law.”
A few weeks ago, I received an email from a PR person identifying herself as writing on behalf of Monsanto, the multinational biotech company that’s so vilified, there’s an annual “March Against Monsanto” event.
Monsanto, the much hated poster-company for the biotech industry, may soon take on another industry: information technology.
That’s what Robb Fraley, Monsanto’s chief technology officer says. “I could easily see us in the next five or 10 years being an information technology company,” he says in Grist.
Monsanto is misunderstood. At least, it feels like it could have a better relationship with Millennials. But instead of learning how to twerk, or getting Taylor Swift to do an ad campaign for GMOs, it has hired a Director of Millennial Engagement.
GMO labeling advocates rejoiced at the news that Vermont’s Senate and House both approved a “no strings attached” mandatory labeling bill for foods containing GMOs sold in the state. The bill now goes to Governor Shumlin’s desk to be signed into law. It will go into effect on July 1, 2016.
South Africa’s Advertising Standards Authority has ordered biotech giant Monsanto to immediately withdraw an advertisement it’s been running on the country’s Radio 702 channel. The decision comes after the African Centre for Biosafety submitted a complaint to the ASA after the ad was aired and found to be inappropriate.
It’s tougher to avoid GMOs than you might think.
