After finding multiple instances of salmonella contamination and unsafe food handling practices at Sunland’s nut processing plant, the FDA has shut them down.
The Food Safety Modernization Act was passed in January 2011 and was supposed to go into full effect in January 2012. Yet here we are nearly into December and the food rules haven’t been published. It looks like that might be changing soon.
On Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke out against cutting funds for food safety. She referred to Republicans as “the e. coli club” for pushing forward an appropriations bill that underfunds the FDA.

FDA Food Safety Modernization Act Passes House for the Third Time; Goes to President Obama to Become Law
Once again the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act passed the House of Representatives. That makes three times through the House and twice through the Senate. Now it goes to President Obama’s desk for signing into law.
In a surprise move Sunday evening, the Senate approved the Food Safety Modernization Act by unanimous consent. Now it goes back to the House – yep, one more time – then on to President Obama.
