Vegan Restaurant: Plant in Asheville

Over the weekend, my husband and I headed up into the Blue Ridge Mountains to Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is one of my favorite cities in the U.S. It has a beautiful, walkable downtown, and the vegan restaurant scene is out of control.

Every year on Halloween weekend, Asheville hosts Moogfest, a huge electronic music festival, and my husband and I attended our third one this weekend. Between shaking our booties to Orbital and catching a mind-blowing set from Explosions in the Sky, we basically ate our way through town.

The food is the real star for me any time we head to Asheville, and this year I was super excited to meet up with my friend Brett at one of the new vegan eateries in town: Plant.

After so many years of choosing what I can eat on restaurant menus, I always get a little bit overwhelmed in vegan restaurants, where instead I get to choose what I want to eat. Plant was no exception: their menu is filled with things that I wanted to eat!

Brett and I ordered the chai mate with coconut foam to sip, and I definitely recommend this drink! Mate doesn’t have a ton of caffeine, but it gives you a nice, mellow energy. The chai spices were lovely, and there was just a touch of coconut milk. This is not the sweet chai you’re used to getting at Starbucks. It tastes more like….it tastes like tea. And it’s delicious!

For my main dish, I got the raw enchiladas. Confession: I was so excited about eating a Plant that I actually knew what I was going to order days before we even left Atlanta. My dish did not disappoint! Check it out (sorry about the camera phone-ness of this photo!):

The raw enchiladas were packed full of nutty vegan cheese and topped with thinly-sliced, marinated raw carrots and zucchini, pumpkin seeds, and a raw tomato sauce. I’m not always mad about zucchini, but this was super tasty! They served up my dish with a generous helping of cashew cream, and what looks like beans on the side there is actually a raw mole sauce that I really could have eaten from a bowl with a spoon. Amazing!

Not everything on the menu is raw, and Brett’s smoked portobella sandwich looked super delicious. It comes topped with arugula, tomato aioli, and vegan mozzarella. Yum!

Plant was everything I dreamed it would be, and I can’t wait to go back to Asheville and eat there again!

On this very quick trip, we also hit Laughing Seed and may or may not have eaten at Rosetta’s Kitchen five times, if you count 2am stops for vegan queso and fries after each evening of Moogfest. I’m sure I’m not the only vegan traveler that’s wowed by Asheville’s vegan restaurant scene. What’s your favorite place to eat there?
