The Anatomy of a Genetically Modified Turkey [Infographic]

We’ve talked a lot about vegan and vegetarian Thanksgiving ideas in the past couple of weeks, but I know that not everyone here is planning a vegan Thanksgiving. If you are planning to eat a turkey this year, I hope that you’ll consider getting yours from a small farm. The typical grocery store Thanksgiving turkey lives a horrible life in confinement conditions and isn’t healthy for you, for public health, or for the planet.

The folks at Ethical Ocean shared an infographic with us breaking down the trouble with typical Thanksgiving turkeys. If you haven’t made it to the store yet, there’s still time to vote against these practices with your pocketbook! It’s a little bit hard to read at this size, but you can click on the photo to view a full-sized image that’s much easier on the eyes.

  1. This Turkey Graphic is misleading. A Turkey that is bread with other turkeys is not a genetically MODIFIED turkey. I understand that the mass production of turkeys is a terrible life for the poor animals, but please don’t confuse people about genetic modification.
Selective breeding is not GENETIC MODIFICATION.

  2. @Matt Potts – I disagree Matt, although there are other aspects to genetic modification, I don’t think it is unreasonable to include that description with selective breeding. Any animal that is subject to an environment not natural to their behaviors is bound to be genetically modified at some level.

  3. Selective breeding is indeed genetic modification. But this ‘infographic’ strongly implies at the bottom that these turkeys are genetically engineered. It says that in order to avoid “genetically modified meat” you can buy organic, which “by law can’t contain any genetically engineered ingredients.”
There has been a preponderance of infographics about “genetic modification” coming out lately that have all been misleading in significant ways, and this is one of them.
