There’s a lot wrong with our food system, but things are beginning to get better. Here’s some recent food news that you can feel good about!
Kelley, we have to talk about your new ad campaign for the milk industry!
The Energy Department’s methane biogas program has been chugging away in relatively obscurity for several years, and now that’s all about to change. The agency has just teamed up with EPA and the Department of Agriculture to announce a new initiative for ramping up manure-to-biogas at dairy farms and other farming operations, called the Biogas Opportunities Roadmap.
Congress left DC for the winter break without agreeing on a Farm Bill. Color me unsurprised.
With approximately 9 million vegetarians and vegans in the U.S., chances are that many families will be hosting an herbivore sometime during the holiday season. It should be a no-brainer—just use soy milk in your mashed potatoes, leave the ham out of the green beans, and use margarine in place of butter. Easy, right?

In fact, other areas of the globe are looking at the typical Western diet as a “what not to do” when it comes to revamping their own health and nutrition programs. But, are they actually making good recommendations after all? The …
A new study by researchers at the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center found that hormones injected into dairy cows during the “production” phase may stick around much longer than expected. Much like that couch surfing friend who has overstayed his welcome, wastewater near dairy farms “contains significant concentrations of estrogenic hormones that can persist for months or even years.” What goes …
Big Dairy has unleashed a new ad campaign that comes across as a blatant attack on its newest competitors: non-dairy milk. Joining the ranks of Coke vs. Pepsi, the “Real Milk Comes From Cows” campaign is laden with language aimed at showing consumers how terrible milk substitutes are for them. Brought to you by The California Milk Processor Board, the ads lined up several milk alternatives next to “real” milk, with labels highlighting the ingredients of each.
