Last week the EPA withdrew a proposed rule that would have required CAFOs to actually disclose information about how they dispose of toxic waste, for the purpose of regulation ensuring compliance with the Clean Water Act. The proposed rule would have required CAFOs to report their basic waste management practices to the EPA. But industry interests threatened litigation — so never mind! Once again the EPA fails to protect anyone but Big Ag interests, continuing its bid for a solid ‘F’ in environmental and consumer protection.
The current food production system is an extremely resource intensive one, where millions of animals are slaughtered to keep up the high demand of cheap meat. The industry is a slave to this demand, relying on traditional economies of scale and forgoing proper oversight. This results in meat contamination, manure runoff and inhumane slaughter, not to mention environmental destruction.
Midwestern hog farmers have been experience problems with exploding manure pits for a few years now, according to the Minnesota Daily. Basically, foam began to build on top of manure pits. This foam supposedly traps methane gas, and if a spark nears it, the pit explodes, taking barns and pigs with it.
Growing up on a small farm taught me a thing or two about meat. The cattle, pigs and chickens on my family’s farm really did enjoy lives close to the ones featured in today’s slick advertising. Right up until my dad’s axe came down on the chicken’s scrawny necks or the butcher drove up and put a bullet between Bessie’s eyes.
