Beat this crazy heat with a healthy soda alternative: a tasty fruit cooler recipe that you can make in a snap!
Summer is still a month away, but the weather report hasn’t really gotten that memo. 2012 was the hottest year on record for the U.S., and 2013 is shaping up to be pretty steamy, too. When temperatures rise, it’s tempting to crack open a cold soda pop, but those cans of soda are terrible for your health!
Not only do most soda cans contain BPA, but conventional soda is full of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Those added sugars (and even diet sweeteners like aspartame) are bad for your health, bad for your waistline, and most likely made from GMOs. Gross!
If you’re looking for an alternative to water that’s not soda pop, these homemade fruit coolers are the way to go! I’ve been drinking them for weeks, and it’s my favorite mid-afternoon treat.
What’s extra fun about these is that you can mix up the fruits you use to make all kinds of interesting flavors. The one pictured above is strawberry with a squeeze of lemon. It tasted almost like a tart strawberry lemonade without a drop of added sugar.
- 1/4 cup fresh or frozen fruit of your choice
- 1 3/4 cups soda water
- citrus (optional)
- 1 pint glass or one-pint Mason jar
- Put your fruit into the bottom of your glass or jar and top off with the soda water. Add a squeeze of citrus, if you want!
- For fresh fruit: Chill for at least an hour before serving, up to overnight.
- For frozen fruit: Chill 8 hours or overnight.
- For instant soda: Use fresh fruit and muddle with a spoon before adding chilled soda water, then give everything a good stir.
