I am not big on juice most of the time, but I do love a green smoothie. So when The Organic Whey offered me a bag of their mustHave Greens powder to review, I went right for it!
Not only am I big on green smoothies, but so is my almost-two-year-old. We make one almost every day, and he loves helping me scoop and pour ingredients into the blender to make them. Ever since cracking our bag of mustHave Greens, we’ve been using this powder instead of raw greens in our smoothies.

The review below is one that I originally shared over at my personal blog, but it felt like something that folks in this space would like, too. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to super love this greens powder, but I was very pleasantly surprised! I love that they’re easy to scoop in, and I don’t have to blend like crazy to get my eight year old blender to turn out a nice, smooth smoothie.
My almost-two-year-old and I made this green smoothie together, and he liked it so much that he insisted on making another one immediately.
My friend and co-worked at Eat Drink Better – Jill Ettinger – hooked me up with a free bag of mustHave Greens to try out. It’s a powdered mix of dehydrated alfalfa grass, oat grass, kale, spirulina, and chlorella that you can add to drinks for a little nutritional boost.
This bag is not cheap, y’all. It’s $84 for a one-pound bag. But that bag contains 90 one-tablespoon servings, so when you break it down, you’re talking about less than a dollar a smoothie.
The package says that you can just mix a tablespoon of mustHave Greens with water, but you guys, I would not recommend doing that. Darrol and I found it pretty undrinkable. And Darrol is a kid who loves wheat grass shots and kimchi. Mixed in a green smoothie, though, I really liked this product.
I used my mustHave Greens as an alternative to raw leafy greens in our green smoothie recipe. What I liked most about them is that you get that boost of veggie nutrition without having to blend furiously. Even with lots of blending, my everyday blender doesn’t get every piece of kale or collards, and with this powder we didn’t have to worry about that.
You could still taste the greens in this a bit over the fruit, but by the second sip I barely noticed it. And like I said, these were a hit with Darrol Henry, who downed two of these in one sitting.
The smoothie directions below have alternative instructions in case you don’t want to use the mustHave Greens, but if you can get your hands on some, I recommend them! They make it easy to whip up a green smoothie at the drop of a hat.
