Peanut butter is a staple in the diet of many American children and quite a few adults. Though peanut butter sounds simple, and should be, supermarket shelves are lined with quite a few varieties.

I bet you already know that “Choosy Moms choose Jif,” “Picky people love Peter Pan peanut butter,” and that Skippy helps you “spread the fun.” Peanut butter can be a nutritious treat, but is the peanut butter in your pantry doing the job?

Nut allergy debates aside, nut butters are a great source of protein. They’re filling which makes them an effective snack food and many people choose to munch on fatty nuts to ditch excess body fat. To separate the good peanut butters from the bad, take a look at the label. A good, natural peanut butter will contain two ingredients – peanuts and salt.

Jif offers a natural peanut butter that promises to deliver 90 percent peanuts. That other 10 percent has been given over to sugar, palm oil, salt and molasses. Commercial peanut butters spread easily, but they also usher in preservatives and tons of added sugar.

Natural peanut butter needs to be stirred, but if you’re really turned off by the amount of stirring, you have options. You can opt for the crunchy variety, as these usually have less separation, or you can place a paper towel in the jar and turn it upside down to absorb excess oil. By draining some of the oil, you not only have to stir less, you’ve reduced the amount of fat in each serving.

Call me a purist, but I like my peanut butter to be all peanuts with a touch of salt and have all the oil it came with. The best peanut butter is within easy reach, you only have to turn the jar around.

      Lisa, I completely agree with you! I grew up on peanut butter (PB and banana, PB with apple sauce and honey, PB and jelly) and luckily for me, my Dad was always into natural foods. I usually buy a quality brand at my local grocery store. Reading labels and knowing what you’re actually getting is SO important. Thanks for your comment :-)
