As site director here at Eat Drink Better, I have to tell you that I am awed every single day at the amazing team we’ve got going here. I feel so lucky to work with a group of such dedicated writers who are as passionate about food as I am. Not only do our writers work hard here at the site, but sometimes they get the chance to talk to other writers about their areas of expertise.

Patricia Larenas–aka Urban Artichoke–is our resident edible gardening expert, and she got a chance to sit down with Alexis Petru at Earth911 earlier this week to chat about growing food. She talked about gardening for beginners and shared some rock-solid tips on how to get started gardening no matter what your situation. Whether you have a house with a big yard or an apartment with a small balcony or windowsill to work with, she’s got you covered. Here’s an excerpt:

It’s also easier to control weeds in raised beds and protect them from snails, slugs, birds and other pests.

You can incorporate flowers among the vegetables you’ll grow in your raised beds – not just for visual appeal, but because these companion plants can assist with pest control and maintain soil quality. In one of Larenas’ raised beds, she plants calendula, nasturtiums and cosmos alongside her tomatoes, peppers, basil and lettuce.

  1. awww, thanks Becky. Calling me an expert is very generous- I just like to grow things a lot, and I hope my experience is useful to others, since I learn from other gardeners too.

The wonderful thing about gardening is sharing, whether it be seeds, harvest, or gardening tips!
