The other day I got into a discussion about beverages. This is a discussion I seem to get into often and it got me thinking about all of the drinks we have to choose from these days. Marketing has really done a number on our diets, and I’m pretty sure it hasn’t made them better. Are all these fruity, vitamin filled, caffeine loaded drinks really beneficial to our health?
What do our Bodies Need to Survive?
The human body can adapt pretty well to different diets. This is evident by the varieties of cultural food around the world. Cultural food is just that, food. The body likes to receive its nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals) from food. Food has special components like phytochemicals and antioxidants that work with the vitamins and minerals for better utilization in the body. To survive, your body just wants food.
Can Some High Calorie Drinks Replace Meals?
I get asked that question all the time. People like to diet and they like to diet easily. Many choose to replace meals with drinks. My first question is why? Why take away amazing tasting food to replace it with vitamin tasting liquid chalk? Your body may not use the nutrients efficiently and you may end up still hungry, and definitely not satisfied. Just eat food.
Are Vitamin Containing Drinks Beneficial?
Your body does need vitamins to perform major functions. Do the vitamins added to drinks help? They may. Can you survive without them? Yes, definitely. How? Eat a well balanced diet! If you eat fruits, veggies, legumes and whole grains, you will consume most of your daily needs for vitamins and minerals. Get creative with new foods and eat a variety of colors. Instead of filling up on vitamin drinks, fill up on real food.
What about those Zero Calorie Drinks?
Even though some drinks have zero calories, they can still take up volume in your stomach. Why waste space in your stomach with something your body can’t use for energy? There is no need to purchase fancy drinks with additives. Well balanced diets contain all the nutrients you need. Most zero calorie drinks have artificial ingredients anyway. Remember to read your labels and consume ingredients you recognize. Make your drinks count!
