Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass

Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food MapThe USDA unveiled the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass last week. It highlights USDA support for local and regional food projects.

Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food is an initiative launched in 2009 to coordinate the work of the various agencies within the USDA that support local and regional food systems.

The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass is a combination of data and an interactive online map. You can zoom in on your area to see what’s happening near you.

Clicking on one of the dots will give you information on the selected project. Clicking on a state will give you numbers, such as benefit recipients, participating farmers and markets, and funding.

The database isn’t complete. In the future, the USDA will be adding more information and more detail, like a farmers market directory and a list of food hubs. Also, it’s good to be aware that the picture provided of local food networks only includes USDA-funded producers and marketers.

The video below discusses the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass. It’s an hour and a half long, but very informative.
