Kids State Dinner

Kids State Dinner, Michelle Obama host

On August 20, 2012, the fifty-four junior chef winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge were treated to a Kids’ State Dinner, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. More than 1200 healthy lunchtime recipes were submitted by kids between the ages of eight and twelve.

The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge asked families to come up with an original, healthy, affordable, and delicious lunch recipe. The recipe must also follow the nutritional guidelines of MyPlate.

The recipes were evaluated by a panel of judges that included White House Assistant Chef Sam Kass, Chef Jose Andres, Portion Size Me authors Marshall and Alex Reid, Epicurious editor-in-chief Tanya Steel, and representatives from the USDA and the Department of Education.

The fifty-four recipes were gathered together into a cookbook. Download the cookbook for free from the Let’s Move site (pdf format).
