On my way home from work I drive by a “U-pick” fruit farm. Now that raspberries are in season, I will be frequenting there more often. When ripe, they slide right off the vine, are just tender, and not too mushy. They can be enjoyed so many ways! Why should we eat them though?
What’s in it for you?
Raspberries are one of the highest fiber fruits. One half cup counts as a serving of fruit. Each full cup has 8g of fiber! That is about one third of the daily recommended amount. One cup also meets 40% of our daily vitamin C needs. Like all other fruits and vegetables, there are very few calories, only 50 per cup. So add them to anything, guilt free!
How to Select and Store
When picking raspberries yourself, choose ones that are just ready to come off the vine. You shouldn’t struggle too much to get them off, and they shouldn’t crumble in your hand. If you are purchasing them at the store or market, avoid mushy wet berries (they tend to be moldy or get moldy fast.)

Run out of ideas to enjoy your berries? Try these:
- add them to your morning cold or hot cereal
- top your favorite plain yogurt with a handful of berries
- create homemade jam
- add 1 cup to your favorite smoothie
- create raspberry sauce for pancakes or waffles
- make fruit leather!
- mix up raspberry puree and top grilled chicken
- make a raspberry pie
- freeze them for later
- juice your berries (you will lose the fiber though!)
