Have you ever made your own applesauce? There is nothing quite like it. It is so easy to make, makes the house smell great, tastes delicious and, yes, makes me do the “Happy Dance” every time I eat it! It is also a great way to use up some of those apples from apple picking.
My family has been making homemade applesauce, or “mush” as we call it, ever since I can remember. There are a lot of misconceptions about how hard it is to make. It is actually very easy, and the end result is worth the little effort.
There are so many ways to eat applesauce. It is great on its own as a snack or dessert. Put it on French Toast or Whole Grain Pancakes with a drizzle of pure maple syrup for an amazing breakfast. Spread it on top of peanut buttered toast or buttered toast. Add it to baking recipes to replace some fat and add some flavor. Use it to top some vanilla or coffee ice cream, yogurt or cottage cheese. Spread it on a sandwich or wrap. Or add it to oatmeal for a nice warm breakfast.
It keeps for about a week, but I doubt it will last that long once your family gives it a taste.
Homemade Applesauce Recipe
- about 16 Macintosh-sized apples
- 4 organic plums
- 2 organic pears
- 2 handfuls frozen organic raspberries
- pinch of sea salt
- 2 Tbs coconut palm, rapadura, or brown sugar (honey or maple syrup should work too.)
- 1/4 C water
- Wash the apples. Grab two large bowls, the apples and an old movie. Set yourself on the couch and start peeling.
- Toss the peels into your compost. Core and slice or dice the apples. Sliced apples cook faster. Place them in a large pot.
- Core and slice or dice your unpeeled plums and pears. Add them to the pot.
- Add the raspberries, salt, sugar and water.
- Cook on med low. Stir often so the bottom does not burn. Bring to a bubble and keep it at a low bubble for about a 1/2 hr to 1 hr, depending upon slicing or dicing. Take in the awesome smell!
- Test to see if the fruit is soft. When done, take off the heat.
- Use an immersion blender to puree to a smooth sauce. A blender or food processor will do the same. Be careful of the steam. Taste for sweetness.
Notes: For a chunky applesauce, without blending, you might want to peel all the fruit. But the skin adds fiber and nutrients. Also, some people like adding fall spices like cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg or clove. Peaches also make a great fruit sauce. Use what you have on hand from the farmer’s market and the freezer.
