Green Smoothie Challenge

After reading Victoria Boutenko’s Green for Life book, I decided to challenge myself to drink green smoothies daily, as she recommends. Here is how it’s going so far.I have been drinking the smoothies for about 10 days now. I have only tried two smoothie recipes so far, but have created four different smoothies (mostly on accident.) The first recipe called for swiss chard and spinach together, but I decided to use Swiss chard one week and spinach the next. It is difficult to go through a large bunch of swiss chard when I’m only using two cups per day. Each green tastes a little different and adds it’s own flavor. The next recipe called for dandelion greens. The first week I accidentally bough mustard greens; week two I bought dandelion greens (what a difference!) Next week I plan on trying two new smoothie recipes with two new greens. I’m trying to vary the type of green to get full green nutrition.

These smoothies make me feel great! My mom is also trying the smoothies with me, and she too feels like she has more energy throughout the day. We both feel full longer and crave “bad” food less. It’s difficult to put something unhealthy in your mouth right after drinking a green smoothie (it just doesn’t seem right!)

I have made one modification to the smoothies–green tea. Each recipe calls for two cups of water. I instead use freshly brewed and chilled green tea. It does not change the taste of the smoothies at all.

  1. I have one pretty much every morning (and feel kinda sad and crappy on the days I don’t). I have more energy and am just happier when I have my big burst of greens in the morning. I alternate greens, too. I’ve been doing kale lately, but had spinach for the first time in awhile this morning. Yum.

    My basic green smoothie for 2 is a blender full of whatever green I’m using (or less for stronger flavored greens), 2-3 frozen bananas, broken into pieces, water or the water from a young coconut, and whatever other frozen or fresh fruit I have available that looks good. Usually it’s some kind of berry (wild blueberries are my fave), but we’ve been using our home grown, frozen figs for the past couple of days and they’re yummmmmmmmy. Add in about a tablespoon of ground flax seeds or chia seeds for some additional fiber and EFAs. Blend and enjoy.
    I put them in the blender (I have a VitaMix)j in that order because I find putting the frozen fruit in the bottom makes it bind up more.
    The green tea is a great idea! You could even cold brew it in the fridge overnight to make it easier.

    1. I brew the green tea the morning of, and I steep it for about five to six minutes. The good benefits of green tea are only good for about two hours after steeping it.

  2. I’m wondering about these green smoothies. I think if folks eat poorly and need a structured way to eat better, a smoothie regime might be ok. I’ve been a vegetarian for nearly 20 years. I imagine I’m getting enough vegetables without having to drink chard in the morning.

    If you feel sad and crappy something else may be wrong.
