I’ve learned a lot about how most beef is produced in this country, and the facts horrify me — from cows being fed food they’re not designed to eat to them spending their last months in a packed lot standing in their own waste.
Yesterday, The Healthy Home Economist posted an infographic on Facebook that summarizes the differences between grass-fed beef production and that of grain-fed beef. If you “like” her Facebook page, you can see a great list of questions and comments on the post that will educate you further and should inspire you to research the facts about what you put in your body.
Here is the infographic. Comments? Questions? What kind of beef do you eat?
Grass Fed is the way to go! Love that infographic.
Yet there are the risks of e. coli and other bacteria still, and the “improved” nutritional profile still isn’t that great. It is still bad for the environment, taking up more resources than a plant-based diet. And it all ends the same for a corn-fed or a grass-fed cow; there is no such thing as humane meat.
There are differing studies on the nutritional “benefits” of eating grass-fed, but the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association doesn’t care what kind of cow you eat, as long as you eat more cows.
Vegan is the way to go!

Thanks for the comments. I’ve read so many pros, cons, questions, answers, semi-answers, and “BS” answers about what we eat. I think the key is to “know what you eat.” If knowing that makes you swear off meat, go for it, because frankly, I consider that on a regular basis the more I read and learn. The only way to really know what you eat is to know the people that produce it. Know your farmer. Know your butcher. Know your fishmonger. Or raise your own food… I’m holding out for a local grass-fed beef source for now. ;-)
