Once again the folks at the Feingold Diet have alerted me to artificial ingredients being slipped into foods that previously did not contain any. This time it is Glaceau fruitwater carbonated water made by the Coca-Cola Company.
According to Fooducate.com, fruitwater carbonated water are known to contain artificial sweeteners (sucralose) and a variety of artificial colors depending on the flavor. Fooducate also notes that they contain EDTA, which is on FDA’s toxicity watchlist. And as if that’s not enough, the ingredient list contains potassium sorbate and potassium benzoate as ingredients, two preservatives which are of questionable safety.
And of course the use of the term ‘naturally flavored‘ should set off alarms. Those of us who follow sustainability and food marketing know that the term ‘natural’ can mean just about anything because it has no real meaning. In fact, I contend that the term ‘natural’ is the single most commonly used greenwash tactic (the Sin of Vagueness). A wide assortment of products, ranging from Skinnygirl Cocktails to Frito Lay’s SunChips toWesson Oil, have been guilty of this marketing ploy.
Ever so careful, the Coca-Cola website calls fruitwater a “naturally fruit-flavored, zero-calorie sparkling water beverage.” Notice how they didn’t mention natural colors or natural preservatives? Ugh.
