Five Food-Related Charities

Looking for a gift for the person who has everything? Or for the person who won’t even hint about what they want? Or maybe you just want to give something to those in need. These charities help people with groceries, farm animals, and vegetable gardens and also food safety, working conditions, and clean water.

On one of the busiest shopping days of the year, you might not want to leave the home. No problem. All these charities accept online donations.

Feeding America – One in six Americans is living with food insecurity. Feeding America funds food banks around the U.S. They also provide a food bank locator if you prefer to feed people in your own city. Donate here.

Center for Science in the Public Interest – CSPI advocates for food safety, nutrition and health, and sound science. CSPI has been instrumental in getting foods labeled with sodium and fat amounts, decreasing the marketing of unhealthy foods to children (still working on it), and other accomplishments. Donate here.

Coalition of Immokalee Workers – This group represents agricultural workers in the United States. CIW has been running the Campaign for Fair Food to improve working conditions in the fields. 83% of the money they receive goes to programs and only 3% to fund-raising. Donate here.

Oxfam – Oxfam promotes lasting solutions to hunger, poverty, and social justice. They have a clever holiday campaign that allows the giver to choose what they give: a goat to provide a family with milk and fertilizer, a farmer’s flock (one cow and two sheep), a vegetable garden, and so forth. Donate here.

charity: water – This charity provides access to clean drinking water in more than twenty countries. This year, they’re raising money for wells in Ethiopia. Donate here. For more water-related charities, check out this page.

  1. I love this!! Every year, my mother-in-law gets me a beehive from Heifer, and it’s my favorite gift from her. The first year that she did it, I cried when I opened the envelope. You know, like happy tears!
