Fooducate is an online tool designed to help you eat and drink better by making  the nutritional value of food products more easy to find and understand. Fooducate’s web site provides a searchable database of food and beverage items, graded based on an algorithm that analyzes ingredients, processing, and nutritional makeup. Want to know how your crackers stack up against the competition? A quick search returns a long list of packaged crackers by brand, with a Fooducate grade, calories per serving, ingredients, and nutritional information for each. Think Froot Loops are healthy because they’re “made with whole grain“? Fooducate gives them a D+, warning  you about the cereal’s trans-fat and sugar content and pointing you to a petition to eliminate artificial colors.

Their information base is broad — encompassing packaged foods, meats, dairy, and produce. It also delivers the facts for many fast foods from chains like Starbucks, Wendy’s, and Chick-fil-A. Fooducate provides a wealth of knowledge about what you’re putting in your body in a simple online search.

Fooducate’s Mobile Apps Scan Bar Codes And Track Your Diet

The ability to easily find nutritional information on the Fooducate web site is awesome, but you can also take it with you on your iPhone or Android. You can:

  • Download the Diet Tracker & Healthy Food Nutrition Scanner. With the basic app (which is free), you can browse for products or scan a product’s bar code to easily find out how healthy it is. You can also track the calories you eat and those you burn through exercise. For a few bucks, you can upgrade to Fooducate Plus and eliminate advertisements.
  • Buy apps designed to help those with food allergies or diabetes make the best choices. The Allergy & Gluten Free Diet Tracker lets you select your allergies (gluten, lactose, peanut, and shellfish, among others). When you browse for food products, it alerts you to those you should avoid. The Diabetes Nutrition & Diet Tracker helps you watch your carb intake and find healthier alternatives to foods you eat.

I downloaded Fooducate a long time ago and then forgot about it – too many apps, too little time. Thanks to our sister site, Vibrant Wellness Journal, for reminding me about this great site and app. I’m heading to the grocery store this morning and will put it to work!

  1. Why on EARTH don’t we Aussies have something like this? We are constantly being told that we are too fat and that we should lose weight but it would seem like our government can’t find the time or money to shine a light on the food that we are eating so that we can easily educate ourselves about where to make changes and what is REALLY good for us. Thank you for sharing this wonderful site and some of it might be usable here but shame on our Aussie government for their lack of ingenuity!

  2. Your thanks made my day. I’m glad I could share the information. We used our scanner at the grocery store today, and I think it made my husband think twice about buying those chips. Also, if you scan products on your mobile phone that aren’t already in the database, you can send Fooducate info about that product. I don’t know if they’ll add products from your neck of the woods, but you never know! Thanks again.

I am so glad that there is sensible information out there that tells you about the type of foods you should eat and are good for you… not just some random diet because of calorie count or fat content. You have to know what is in the food you are eating… also you need to know how your body responds to the way you eat too!
