The FEED Foundation
The FEED Foundation was founded to feed school children in developing countries. In less than two years, they had funded more than 50 million meals for children. Money was raised through a combination of direct donations and the purchase of FEED Bags, available at health food stores and online.
The Foundation also formed The 30 Project to reflect on the fact that obesity and hunger are inextricably linked in our world and to encourage people to gather in groups and consider what we could all do to improve school nutrition.
FEED USA is their first foray into American school nutrition. The U.S. government funds school lunches in America, so FEED USA is looking to fund nutrition and educational projects on a local level.
Through DonorsChoose.org, anyone can select a FEED USA project to donate to. Choose from among the list of projects that show up, or narrow the selection by state (click on the state on the left hand side). Teachers can sign up their classroom project. Once a project is fully funded, FEED USA will send the money or supplies to the chosen school.
FEED USA for The Gap
The Gap has partnered with FEED USA to create FEED USA Bags to promote giving. Tote bags are available in Gap stores and online for $29.50 and specially designed Feed Bags are available only in Gap stores for $39.50. $5 from the purchase of each bag goes to the DonorsChoose project of your choice.
(The Gap was recently criticized for incorrect signage in their stores. The tote bags are made in the USA, but the denim Feed Bags are made in China. If the signage flap irritates you, please consider donating online. The money does get to the kids.)
This is a great idea for holiday giving, whether the money is given through the purchase of a bag or directly online. School funds can only stretch so far and teachers’ projects can have so much impact on a child’s life.
