Food Day has been around in one form or another since 1975. Its organizers describe it as “a nationwide celebration and movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food.” This year’s theme is “Eat Real” — a perfect companion to our October Unprocessed celebration, don’t you think?

What does it mean to eat real?

From a Food Day point of view, eating real means:

  • Eating healthier. What we put in our bodies should promote — not undermine — our health. Not shocking, yet still under-appreciated by so many, leading to a $147 billion spend on direct and indirect diet-related health care costs in the U.S. every year.
  • Eating food produced organically, sustainably, and kindly. Three of the Food Day priorities focus on food production — a system that is so broken in our country today. Eating real means supporting organic, sustainable farms, discontinuing support for factory farmed food, and ensuring the folks that raise our food live humanely and are paid fairly.
  • Helping others eat better too. About 50 million Americans live without food security. We’re part of a larger ecosystem, and Food Day works to promote a sense of community in an effort to end hunger in a world where we waste an average of 40% of the food we purchase.

The Food Day crew created an Eat Real quiz anyone can take. Tell the mysterious quiz people what you eat, and they’ll let you know how real it is. Scoring is based on how the food you eat affects your health, the environment, and animal welfare.

I wish there were some questions related to community involvement to help reduce hunger. Maybe that will come in the Eat Real Quiz 2.0.

In my opinion, eating real (or eating more organically… or wasting less food… or consuming less processed food… or any of the other viewpoints we share here on EatDrinkBetter) is relative. I hope to eat better every day than I did the day before. (I want my family to do the same, but there’s a limit to my influence on two teenage girls and a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy.)
