There’s nothing like an infographic to put an environmental issue in perspective.
The folks at www.OnlineAssociatesDegree.com put together this great visual that highlights the world’s water issues and the potential concerns in supply and survivability.
Drawing from sources as disparate as the NY Daily News and Water.org this graphic tells us that global water politics are a serious matter. For example, no example is more poignant that the fact that North American women spend 399 hours a year shopping while third world women spend the same amount of time collecting water.
So, what can we do? The graphic tell us that “conserving water in your home a little can help a lot”:
- Flush the toilet less – this can save about 6 gallons
- Cut 4 minutes off your shower time – this save 30 gallons
- Reduce (I vote eliminate) your bottled water consumption – well, this is a no brainer…
And to this list I would add:
- Discover and repair leaks. Leaks can lead to a significant—and completely unnecessary—misuse of water.
- Insert water displacement devices in older toilets to reduce the volume of water used every time you flush.
- Install aerators on faucets to reduce the amount of water coming from your fixtures.
- Water lawns and flower beds between 9 pm and 9 am, when water pressure is highest, wind is lowest and there is less evaporation.
