Cutting Back on Sugar for Your Health

cutting back on sugar

Confession time! I have a pretty rabid sweet tooth. It’s super hard for me to resist anything chocolate, and if we keep sugary treats in the house, I tend to go way overboard. How do you cut back on sugar without feeling deprived?

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about my sugar consumption and toying with trying to actively replace the cookies and cupcakes in my life with healthier alternatives, so I was thrilled when Andrea Devon at our newest sister site – Vibrant Wellness Journal – began sharing her journey to a lower sugar life.

So far, Andrea has shared two pieces about her experience, and I highly recommend you checking them out! They’re very informative and inspiring:

One trick that’s been working for me is adding a splash of unsweetened cranberry or lemon juice to my water a few times a day, usually about 1 part juice to 6 parts water. It gives me a little bit of flavor without any refined sugars. Using seltzer water instead of flat water makes this into even more of a treat!

I’m not sure I’m ready to totally give up the vegan doughnuts, but I definitely want to try out some of her tips, especially some of her suggestions for replacing sweets with healthy, whole food alternatives.

Are any of you cutting back the sugar in your diets? What has worked for you?

  1. I love to follow dinner with some mint tea with just a pinch of honey…satisfies the craving more than I ever expected it to. Plus, mint tea is a great digestive aid. Win-win! :)
