Crafty Bastards is an annual craft market in Washington, DC, and this year, they’re adding a foodie twist.
There’s a new and delicious addition to this year’s Crafty Bastards. Washington City Paper celebrates the burgeoning D.I.Y. food movement with a Food Craft section at Crafty Bastards. A “Foodie Bastards,” if you will.
Crafty Bastards is one of my favorite crafts shows in the whole country, and this will be my third year participating as a crafty vendor. You can imagine my joy when I got a note from the organizers announcing the brand new Food Craft Section of the market! DC peeps: you’d be crazy to miss this show, and if you do pop by, come say hello to me at my crafty booth! My booth name is Glue and Glitter.
Food Craft Section at Crafty Bastards
While America’s biggest brands line supermarket shelves, independent food crafters with strong D.I.Y. chops are toiling in home kitchens and basements to bring top quality products to market.
The 8th annual Crafty Bastards Arts and Crafts Fair will extend into the realm of gastronomy and celebrate DC’s rich and expanding craft food scene. Powered by Roadside Food Projects, this inaugural program features a D.I.Y. Salon that will host some of the area’s best culinary talent as they teach exciting craft food techniques, a Crafty Food Market that displays and serves great artisanal food—and the highlight, the Crafty Food Awards, to crown the city’s best food crafters.
As part of the Oct. 1, 2011 food craft festivities, they’re also hosting the Crafty Food Awards. There will be tastings, demonstrations, and on-site judging by some of D.C.’s top chefs and food writers.
Crafty Food Awards: Call for Entries!
The Crafty Food Awards will showcase the craft food community’s best food and beverage products from Washington, D.C. and beyond. They’re looking for the best craft foods in 3 categories: preserves, pickles, and beer, and all ingredients should be non-GMO, organic, and local wherever possible.
The rules are simple: get your products and submission form in during the month of August. Finalists will be announced by Sept. 15. The top three contenders in each category will be featured and a roster of distinguished judges will select winners in a public “taste-off” at the Crafty Bastards Fair.
All applicants must submit the following:
- Completed Submission Form (all fields are required – download pdf form here)
- Clearly labeled product samples
- $10 application fee
The winner in each category will be awarded free entry into next year’s Good Food Awards (subject to Good Food Awards submission criteria) and will be awarded a very special Crafty Food Awards Trophy.
