If I could invite six people — living or dead — to join me for a meal, I would place Julia Child in the seat of honor.
I didn’t learn to love cooking until late in life. (Just like Julia.) I adore cooking good food for friends and family. (Just like Julia.) And I covet big, sharp knives and happy, well-loved pots and pans. (Just like Julia.) The more I learn about her life, the more it inspires me to really live my own.
On August 15th, 2012, Julia would have celebrated her 100th birthday. To honor her, PBS has planned a few events, and if you love Julia like I love Julia, I’m sure you’ll want to join the party.
Beginning August 5th, go to the PBS #CookForJulia web site to watch Julia’s TV career unfold through streaming videos of her cooking shows. Don’t miss full episodes of The French Chef — the show that brought her into our living rooms and hearts. (You can even download selected episodes in iTunes.) Watch her cook with friends, like Jaques Pepin and Emeril Lagasse. And don’t miss Dan Akroyd’s Saturday Night Live Julia Child spoof — even if you’ve watched it a hundred times. Between August 5th and August 15th, PBS wants you to find and cook a Julia Child recipe. Don’t know how to cook? Neither did Julia when she first started trying to impress her new husband with homemade dishes! Buy fresh, local ingredients, cook with passion, and enjoy what you eat, whether it’s restaurant-ready or not. Get To Know (And Love) Julia
If you don’t know much about the lovely and talented Mrs. Child, read My Life In France, a memoir of her years as an early bride, wife of a foreign diplomat, and new chef. You’ll learn how she came to co-author the quintessential French cookbook for the American cook, and you’ll hear her voice speaking to you from every page. In her own words:
I don’t think about whether people will remember me or not. I’ve been an okay person. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve taught people a thing or two. That’s what’s important.
