Broccoli Recall for Listeria Contamination

Safeway broccoli

Taylor Farms and Safeway are issuing a voluntary broccoli recall after a test sample was positive for listeria contamination.

The broccoli recall is for several products that contain fresh broccoli, like deli salads, in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington State, and Wyoming.

If you’re in good health, listeria is more inconvenient than anything else, causing symptoms like headaches and nausea. For young children, folks in poor health, and the elderly, listeria infections can be fatal. Pregnant women also need to be especially wary, because listeria can cause stillbirth or miscarriage.

You can see a more detailed list of the broccoli recall, including a list of products over at Safeway’s press release.

Ugh, this worries me. So is listeria something you can’t wash off from a vegetable? Come to think of it, how do you wash broccoli properly? I feel like I always do a poor job cleaning it.

I feel very much the same, it is difficult to clean. I usually steam it so the heat would kill the bacteria but my little grandchildren eat it raw, so it’s a bit worrying.
Some people wash their vegetables in Milton, I’ve always thought that to be rather over cautous but I may well change my mind
