Kitchen Hacks Your Mom Never Taught You

Dear Mom,

Thanks for teaching me to sprinkle baking soda on a stovetop fire, cover leftovers with clean shower caps, and liquify honey by putting the bottle in a warm water bath for 5 to 10 minutes. It’s great that you showed me how to use an eggshell to pick out bits of shell that always seem to end up in the raw eggs I break. These tips have served me well over the years. You’re the best!

But Mom, either you held out on me or your kitchen toolkit just wasn’t all that full when I was growing up. (I like to believe the latter.) I found a list of 73 kitchen hacks on Greatist.com, only a few of which you taught me. “73?” you might ask. Yep. 73! Tips for storing, prepping, and cooking food. Tricks for freezing, reheating, and cleaning. And cool ideas for organizing your kitchen and keeping it safe.

So now it’s my turn to teach you a few new tricks! You have to read the full list, but here are some of my faves.

Kitchen Hacks I Know Work

Mom, I’ve tried a few of the 73 kitchen hacks. They work. Since you may not be in-the-know, here ya’ go…

#14. Pit cherries without a cherry pitter. Put a cherry on top of an empty bottle, and use a chopstick to push the pit into the bottle. (Now please make me a cherry pie, hint, hint.)

#16. Peel ginger in a snap. Ginger’s bumpy exterior makes peeling with a vegetable peeler challenging. Use a spoon instead! It gets into all the nooks and crannies.

#24. Hull strawberries with a straw. Seriously, this works. Push a straw from the bottom of a strawberry toward the top, and it will push the hull and most of the leaves out the stem end. It does a much better job than a knife or those silly little metal clippy things we ordinarily use.

#54. Preserve fresh herbs. Chop them up, put them in an ice cube tray, and cover with water, olive oil, or broth. Freeze those puppies and toss them into soups, stews, and sauces for a punch of yum. (I’ve got trays of basil in olive oil if you need any.)

Kitchen Hacks I Can’t Wait to Try

You’re not the only one with room in their kitchen toolkit. Here are a few new tricks I’m itching to test.

#7. Stop wrestling with the plastic wrap. Apparently, storing the roll in the refrigerator makes it easier to use.

#20. Peel bananas from the bottom. I’ve heard this before but haven’t tried it yet. Monkeys peel bananas from the bottom, and supposedly that’s the best way to do it.

#41. Keep pots from boiling over. This tip claims that placing a wooden spoon across the top of a pot stops boil-overs, because wood doesn’t conduct heat well. Who knew?

#53. Chill beverages without diluting them. I am so eager to try chilling my next cocktail or glass of wine with a few frozen grapes. I know you don’t drink booze, but this should work for other beverages too, don’t you think? (Must put grapes on the grocery list.)

#72. Keep knives sharp. Grandmom’s Wusthof knife set sits on my kitchen island, but I never thought about storing the knives upside-down. Storing knives blade-side-up will keep them from dulling. Super tip.

Thanks Mom for sharing your wisdom and just being the Best. Mom. Ever. Hopefully, this list will teach you (you old dog) a few new tricks. See you for turkey!
