It’s National Farmers Market Week

Studies show that most supermarket produce has traveled hundreds of miles from harvest to store. During its trip, it has lost most of its nutritional value and taste. Why buy dismal, well-traveled fruits and vegetables when you can find superb, locally-grown produce at a farmers market in your area?

There’s no better time to find a farmers market than now, as National Farmers Market Week hits its peak in the next few days.

United States Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, proclaimed August 5th to 11th National Farmers Market Week, and the USDA kicked it off with a news release reporting a 9.6 percent increase in its National Farmers Market Directory listings in the past year. Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan highlighted that:

Farmers markets are a critical ingredient to our nation’s food system. These outlets provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also to the communities looking for fresh, healthy foods. The directory is an online tool that helps connect farmers and consumers, communities and businesses around the country.

To make the most of Farmers Market Week — or any week — support farmers and feed your family better food by shopping at a local farmers market. You can find one by using one of several online search engines, including The USDA National Farmers Market Directory, the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food CompassLocal Harvest, and Local Dirt. You can also check out a new app, the Fresh Food Finder, which is available for the iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Without farmers, there would be no food. Support your community by celebrating Farmers Market Week and continuing to shop at local markets year round.
