Food and Drinks to Help You Beat the Winter Blues

Got the winter blues? Mixing up your diet may just help!

Got the winter blues? Mixing up your diet may just help!

The winter months are bearing down upon us, and for many this means more stress and losing that healthy glow that makes summer so awesome. Although we may be tempted for a quick sunless tan fix at the local tanning salon, this will only help your outer glow. Luckily, there are lots of ways that you can change up your diet to maintain your radiance both inside and out.

Don’t Deprive Yourself of Color, Especially Red, Orange, and Yellow

One of the reasons that summer brings a good mood and a healthy glow, aside from the obvious effects of the sun, are the increased consumption of fresh fruits and veggies. Red, orange and yellow produce such as carrots, oranges, and winter squash contain antioxidants called carotenoids that help keep your skin clear and glowing. Some research even suggests that the average person finds the glow produced by carotenoids more than a glow from the sun alone.

With this in mind, it should be obvious that it is doubly important to eat lots of fruits and vegetables during the winter months. Not only will you feel healthier overall—thus avoiding the “winter blahs”—but you will look healthier as well. Many people walk past the produce aisle when they enter the grocery store, and head to other, less healthy sections. Make a conscious decision to stop here first, and you will be surprised at how many delicious treats you will find, in lieu of salty chips or guilt-inducing ice cream.

Mood-Boosting Drinks

When winter months hit, they often hit hard, resulting in flagging energy and difficulty staying awake. As a result, we often turn to more coffee or soda to pep us up. Unfortunately, these drinks play havoc on your complexion and your energy level. Instead, drink water, and lots of it.

Water helps to flush toxins and waste products out of your body, and will give you a healthy glow if you drink it regularly. If you have a sweet tooth that insists upon being satisfied, skip the soda pop and go for a steaming cup of fair trade hot cocoa, which contains antioxidants known as flavonoids that absorb UV light and help increase blood flow to the skin, thus improving its overall appearance. Dark chocolate (in moderation) also helps reduce stress hormones, which can help boost your mood, as well.

Above all, smile! Smiling and laughing make us look healthy and relieves stress, which will go a long way toward beating those winter blues.
