Toffee Apples

toffee apples
Toffee apples, or candy apples, are fun and simple to make. Here’s a simple recipe to try just in time for the Halloween season.
Ingredients and materials
  • 1 cup organic sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 0.5 tsp vinegar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 6 apples
  • 6 wooden skewers or popsicle sticks
  • Sauce pan
  • Candy thermometer (helpful, but not absolutely necessary)
  • Wax paper or oiled tray

Method

  1. Over medium heat, dissolve the sugar in the water.
  2. After it is dissolved, add the vinegar, syrup and butter. You can also add red food coloring if you are into that.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil. Do not stir.  Cook until the hard-crack stage (280 degrees Fahrenheit), about 10 minutes of boiling. An alternative way to check is that a drop of the mixture hardens into a ball when dropped into cold water.
  4. While the mixture is cooking put a skewer through the bottom of each apple.
  5. Once the toffee is ready, dip each apple into the hot toffee, turning it to coat the apple.
  6. Let the toffee harden by placing the dipped apples onto waxed paper or an oiled tray.
