What to Eat to Be Healthy

What to eat is a question many of us have pondered. We all know there are toxins in the food supply, but how do we avoid them? The Non Toxic Revolution offers ten simple rules to follow to be healthy.

R – Read ingredient labels. If you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it.

E – Eat organic and/or local. Organic foods are often healthier. Farmers markets can cost less and the food is fresher than the produce at the grocery store.

V – Vegetables are your friends. Eat 5-8 servings of vegetables each day in a variety of colors.

O – Obesity increases your risk of getting cancer, as well as all the cardiovascular problems we’ve known about for a while.

L – Less animal products. Most meat, dairy, and eggs comes from factory farms and is less healthy than that of pasture-raised animals.

U – Use caution while barbecuing. Grilling can produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are stored in fatty tissues and can increase the risk for breast cancer.

T – Trans fats can cause cancer. Don’t forget that U.S. labeling regulations allow up to 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving to be called β€œzero transfats”.

I – Increase vitamin D and calcium. You don’t have to drink milk to get these two nutrients; sunlight for vitamin D and spinach for calcium are all you need.

O – One drink a day is enough. No, abstaining from alcohol for six days and drinking seven drinks on one night is not the same.

N – No smoking.
