Vegan Cookies: Oat Flour Chocolate Chip

Oat flour is a healthy, gluten-free (well, almost gluten-free) alternative to regular flour, and so easy to make at home! All you need are oats and a blender. I used Quaker oats, the slow-cooking kind for these vegan cookies. Using instant or quick-cooking oatmeal will make the dough of whatever you’re making mushy.

Vegan Cookies


  • 2 cups oat flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegan margarine
  • 1/4 cup canola or sunflower seed oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 cup vegan chocolate chips

Cooking Directions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F and grease a baking tray.

  2. Mix oat flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a bowl. Add margerine and oil and stir until mixed. If the mixture is too dry, add a tablespoon of soy milk. Add chocolate chips last and mix.

  3. Roll tablespoon-sized balls of dough and flatten them with the back of a wet spoon on your baking tray. Bake for about 10 minutes, or until golden brown.

  • fyi that if you’re cooking for a person with coeliac or gluten-intolerance, Quaker oats have the worst cross-contamination record around. They flour their production lines to keep the oats and grits they package rolling freely, so there is a lot of gluten present in their products. For true gluten-free cookies, one would have to use certified gluten-free oatmeal and flour.

  • thank you for posting a “vegan friendly” cookie recipe. They are sometimes hard to come by. I am going to try this recipe with “Xocai Healthy Chocolate” for the “vegan chocolate chips”. “Xocai” products are “gluten free, vegan and vegetarian friendly!”

  • Quaker Oats oatmeal is not even close to being gluten free with all of the cross-contamination issues. If you want to make a gluten free cookie please use certified, gluten free oats (such as Gluten Free Oats, LLC).

  • I made these last night and they were all gone before the morning! No one knew they were oatmeal OR vegan! Thanks for a great recipe :)

  • I made these last night with a few changes and they are INCREDIBLE. I suggest you refrigerate the dough an hour before baking. I also added 1 cup oats, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 cup walnuts, 1/2 cup dried cherries tot the dough. You can also bake these as bars by putting the dough into a 9×11 baking dish and baking for 22 minutes. Honestly the best cookies I’ve made.
