Peaches and Plums May Help Prevent Breast Cancer
Researchers at Texas A&M University in College Station have found that peaches and plums contain a phenol that inhibits the growth of non-estrogen receptive breast cancer cells. A little over one-third of breast cancers are of the non-estrogen receptive type and they tend to be more aggressive than estrogen receptive cancers.
Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos and Dr. David Byrne of AgriLife Research at Texas A&M tested the Rich Lady peach and the Black Splendor plum, two commercially-grown varieties from California, for their potential in inhibiting the growth of breast cancer cells.
The phenols prevented the breast cancer cells from growing while not damaging the healthy non-cancerous cells.
Peaches and plums are both in season right now. They’re high in vitamins A and C – and they’re delicious to boot. Why not eat a few?
