Top News from the Food Front: Chicken Ick, Meat Recall, GMO Rejection, & Vegan Pizza

December 21st, 2013 | by Tanya Sitton

This week's news features not one but two reports indicting the chicken industry, as well as the USDA's (ahem) 'regulatory' oversight of it. GMOs face new and improved regulation in Hawaii, but China kicks our imports to the curb for sub-par GMO-related quality control; meanwhile Whole Foods ditches suppliers over genetically modified ingredients. If you still eat animal meat, beware! Several meat recalls are underway -- none of them (so far) involve horse meat, but that could change if horse slaughter's allowed to resume as planned. A recent study touted health benefits of organic milk over conventionally produced milk; but did you get the full story? Read on, for the week's top news in food!

Vegan Recipe: Doggie Pill-Pockets!

December 16th, 2013 | by Tanya Sitton

Topeka! I have found it! I know I'm not the only veg-head who cringes at the thought of supporting animal agribusiness when my pill-averse pup needs medication. 'Just put it in a hot dog, or some cheese,' says the vet. Well I'd really rather not, actually! Since my heathen hound has mastered the art of external peanut butter removal, towards the apparent goal of leaving very clean and slightly dissolved-at-the-edges pills on my floor, I had to find a better way. Try this easy vegan recipe for pill-pockets your canine friend will happily wolf down -- with no hot dogs or dairy junk anywhere nearby!

Top News from the Food Front: Sugary Cancer, Food Industry Cruelty, Non-GMO Win, and Norway’s Military Vegfest

November 23rd, 2013 | by Tanya Sitton

This week's news will make you cry, make you sigh, and make you smile. Some of it may even help you avoid diabetes, cancer, and kidney failure! New health research indicts meat and soft drinks, but encourages healthy eaters to go nuts. Animal factories continually find new ways to turn the stomachs of anyone who glimpses their work -- and then they file charges against those who dare to see (and record) it. USDA proposes new anti-poop policies targeting organic farmers; but announces new projects supporting local food in public schools. Hawaii knocks the GMO-regulation ball right out of the park! In other breaking news, I suddenly want to move to Norway. Read on, for all the week's top food news!

Top News from the Food Front: Righteous Research, Processed Poison, AgriBiz Aggro, and a Vegetarian Ruckus

November 16th, 2013 | by Tanya Sitton

This week's top stories bring some nifty research to the table: meat and diabetes, school lunches and student health, Alzheimer's and herbs! The FDA tries some more baby steps towards regulating dangerous stuff in our food -- what a neat idea! -- and processed foods reach a new low, sending children to the emergency room. GMO apples that resist turning brown won't save the world; but they're the hot new biotech item, and the USDA seeks public comment about it. Also, cattle ranchers hate Joan Jett -- read on to find out why!
