Top News from the Food Front: Organic Market Booms, USDA Drops Balls

May 17th, 2014 | by Tanya Sitton

What's new in food? Glad you asked! This week the USDA shows off its rubber stamp for 'humane' meat and poultry labels, while it shops for guns (no, really!) instead of regulating anything as silly as food labels. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of pounds of meat are recalled due to lack of USDA inspection. In less infuriating news, consumers seek out organics in ever-increasing numbers, and nifty new research weighs in on both high blood pressure and Egyptian vegetarians.

Is your 'Chef's Special' dinner protected by copyright law? Do you know what potentially problematic chemistry your yoga mat and your bread (plus about 500 other grocery items in your pantry) might have in common? Consumers increasingly turn away from genetically modified food: does the food industry give a flip? Does the FDA? For all this food news and more -- including a long list of factory-farm foolishness to boggle the noodles of non-sociopathic food fans --- read on!

Top News from the Food Front: Ag-Gag Alert, GMNo, & Food-Package Poison

February 22nd, 2014 | by Tanya Sitton

Idaho strides boldly towards hideousness, with its latest bill aimed at criminalizing animal-ag whistleblowers. Food stamp use rises among a population where it absolutely should not, and a new report indicts the 'substantial equivalence' assessment that boosted GMOs to grocery-shelf sovereignty. Meanwhile poison seeps into your food from its packaging, and grocery manufacturers try to dupe you with deceptive labeling -- okay, technically that last thing isn't (strictly speaking) 'news.' But the food news world has been hopping this week: don't miss the good stuff, read on!

Don't drink the water, and don't eat the beef. Don't go to Chick-fil-A, but DO give 'em a high-five for their recent move against antibiotic resistance. New research links food prices to diabetes risk for low-income consumers, Idaho strives towards ag-gag ugliness, and farmers sue each other over genetic contamination. Meanwhile, genies with name-tags reading 'GMO awareness' and 'plant-based health' escape irretrievably from bottles. Read all about it: get your weekly food news fix here!

Top News from the Food Front: Chicken Ick, Meat Recall, GMO Rejection, & Vegan Pizza

December 21st, 2013 | by Tanya Sitton

This week's news features not one but two reports indicting the chicken industry, as well as the USDA's (ahem) 'regulatory' oversight of it. GMOs face new and improved regulation in Hawaii, but China kicks our imports to the curb for sub-par GMO-related quality control; meanwhile Whole Foods ditches suppliers over genetically modified ingredients. If you still eat animal meat, beware! Several meat recalls are underway -- none of them (so far) involve horse meat, but that could change if horse slaughter's allowed to resume as planned. A recent study touted health benefits of organic milk over conventionally produced milk; but did you get the full story? Read on, for the week's top news in food!
