Vegan Ice Cream Challenge - Purely Decadent Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl

It’s been hovering in the upper 90s here in Atlanta, and weather like this makes me crave ice cream like no other. This year, I’m on the hunt for my favorite vegan ice cream! The plan is to try new pints each week and share my findings right here. I know, it’s a tough life I’ve got.

In the spirit of eating less soy, I went for a pint this week with a coconut milk base. This one does have some soy ingredients, so if you’ve got an allergy you’ll want to beware. Some of their flavors are completely soy free, but the Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl contains soybean oil and soy lecithin. Enough with the allergy information already! Let’s get to this week’s frozen vegan treat!

The Stats

  • Ingredients: organic coconut milk, organic agave syrup, peanut butter (roasted peanuts, soybean oil, sugar, salt), chocolate flake (beet sugar, coconut oil, cocoa processed with alkali, chocolate liquor, soya lecithin, vanilla), chicory root extract, cocoa (processed with alkali), carob bean gum, guar gum, natural flavor
  • Calories per 1/2 cup: 210
  • Total fat per 1/2 cup: 13g
  • Total saturated fat per 1/2 cup: 9g
  • Total fiber per 1/2 cup: 6g
  • 1/2 cup contains: 8% of your iron (based on a 2000 calorie diet)
  • Price: $4.99 per pint

The Verdict
They are not joking about that purely decadent thing! The Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl is much higher in fat and saturated fat than last week’s pint, but it also has a much more ice-creamy texture.

If you are not a fan of coconut, you’ll probably want to steer clear of this brand. Before this, I’d only had their vanilla flavor and their vanilla almond bars. You can definitely taste the coconut milk in this brand, but for a coconut lover like me that’s no problem at all! Just an aside: their vanilla almond bars are out of this world.

The chocolate peanut butter swirl was….well, it was amazing! There were big chunks of chocolate inside, and the swirl of peanut butter was a great salty taste alongside all that sweet. Unlike the Ice Supreme, the texture was completely creamy, just like dairy ice cream, and it tasted really rich.

If you’re looking to snag a pint, there’s a store locator on the Turtle Mountain website. Turtle Mountain, the parent company, specializes in non-dairy treats. They make coconut milk- and soy-based ice creams, milks, and yogurts.
