5 Reasons to Eat Homegrown Vegetables

Need a reason to finally break ground on that spring garden? Homegrown vegetables are better for your health, your wallet, and the planet.

Gardening can seem intimidating, but like most things, getting started is the hardest part. Once you see those first seedlings sprout or harvest that first pepper, the fun really starts.

1. Homegrown Vegetables Travel Fewer Miles

If you buy your vegetables in a mainstream store, you don’t always know where it has come from, how it has been nurtured, or how long it has been stored in an industrial chiller. These questions need never arise again if you grow your own vegetables or source them locally.

2. Homegrown Vegetables are Healthier

You know that fresh veggies can help prevent cancer, but the longer you wait between harvesting and eating, the more those benefits degrade.

If your veggies have traveled for many miles before you buy them and take them home for supper, you’re missing out. Many imported vegetables are even picked before they are ripe, so that they can withstand longer transport times. Unfortunately, that means they don’t have time to mature and reach their peak vitamin and mineral contents either.

3. Growing Your Own is Wallet-Friendly

Many people don’t realize that it’s more cost effective to grow your own vegetables, rather than buying them from a store. This has the added benefit that you don’t have to buy expensive compost or fertilizers to encourage growth. It’s easy to produce nutritious plant mulch from ordinary yard waste. Homegrown vegetables are cheaper and healthier.

4. Growing veggies can be easy.

There are a lot of myths about garden pests and the difficulty of growing vegetables.

You can also introduce some more interesting vegetable varieties to your yard. Trying some heritage plants, black tomatoes, or purple beans might even tempt your kids to eat more vegetables. You can buy these from any garden center or online seed store.

Bonus benefit to homegrown vegetables: Kids are more likely to eat their veggies if they helped grown and harvest them. Get those picky eaters out into the garden!
