I admit it: I could never quite get the hang of green smoothies. I know they’re supercharged with calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin C, flavonoids, omega-3s, and other good stuff; but unlike their fruitier cousins, I just didn’t like them very much — that is, until now! 40 Days of Green Smoothies offers a solid game plan for working these nutritious drinks into your routine, with delicious recipes to make you crave kale!

Becky Striepe’s 40 Days of Green Smoothies makes it easy to get started down the sweet green healthy-smoothie path. The weekly shopping lists provide a road-map for building up smoothie-friendly stores, and the daily recipes will knock your socks off. By the end of the 40-day plan, don’t be surprised if your days just don’t feel complete without a green smoothie!

One tricky part of cultivating a green smoothie habit is simply managing your supplies, so that you’ve always got a variety of smoothie ingredients handy without constantly running to the store for fresh produce. Striepe offers a shopping list for week one of the green smoothie experiment including staples like flax seeds, chia seeds, frozen fruit, cocoa powder, and maple syrup, along with a few perishables like bananas, almond milk, kale, and avocados.

Every week thereafter, 40 Days of Green Smoothies provides shopping lists to steadily build up your smoothie-making stores without breaking the bank. By the end of the 6-week program, with hardly any effort at all, you’ll have a well-stocked pantry and (better yet!) a well-set green smoothie habit.

The author does an excellent job of keeping costs low without sacrificing variety or creativity. The book itself is only $4.99, available for iPad or PDF download, which comes to only about 12 cents per recipe! Suggested shopping lists are modest and inexpensive, making use of a relatively small number of ingredients in interesting combinations.

For Example!

Smoothie #4 has a nice mellow tropical groove:

  • 1/2 cup frozen banana
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 1-2 leaves of kale, ribs removed
  • 1/4 cup frozen mango
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 4 ice cubes

But Smoothie #15 offers a delightful ‘Mexican hot chocolate’ sort of kick:

  • 1/2 cup frozen banana
  • handful of fresh spinach
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons flax meal
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • 2 cubes of ice

And oh my goodness, the strawberries and ginger in Smoothie #18…. mmmm!!

  • 1/4 of a Haas avocado
  • 1/4 cup frozen strawberries
  • handful of fresh kale
  • 1-2 tablespoons ginger juice
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons flax meal
  • 2 cubes of ice
