What the What is Carnism?

melanie joyWhy do we wear and eat certain animals and cherish the others as pets?

This question, or philosophy really, was posited by Melanie Joy, the author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows. If we really stopped to think about why we prefer, as a culture, to eat certain animal over others, we would realize that nothing in terms of meat-eating is natural; it’s all quite subjective…and subject to the society of the day’s norms and mores.

Joy has now launched the Carnism Awareness and Action Network (CAAN) to provide a springboard for helping this oppressive ideology (think sexism, racism…) come to the forefront of consumer consciousness.
