Not too long ago, I shared my friend Allyson’s awesome recipe for pumpkin hummus from her site, Manifest Vegan, on my personal Facebook. Along with the “yum!” and “omg!” comments that I expected, one person said that he wasn’t vegan, but he might try this. That comment has been tumbling around in my head ever since.
The fellow who made the comment is someone I like and respect very much, and I don’t think it really speaks so much about him as it does about a general perception about vegan food. When you mention vegan food to a lot of folks, they picture grainy baked goods, iceberg lettuce salads, and granola. While I don’t have anything against salad or granola, I think a really important part of vegan activism is dispelling the terrible myth that vegan food is somehow not food.
Even if you’re not vegan, I bet that you eat one or two vegan things every single day. Do you have a banana with your breakfast? Chips and hummus at snack time? Black bean soup at lunch? Pasta marinara at dinner? Chances are, you just ate vegan food, whether you’re vegan or not.
This misconception is a major reason that I launched the Eating Vegan series, and it’s why I chose that name. Not being vegan. Not living vegan. Eating vegan. You can do it at just one meal a day or even once a week or once a month. The idea is to try to encourage folks give it a go and see what it’s like to skip the animal products in favor of a cruelty free meal.
