Small Space Gardening: Grow a Vertical Garden


Eating and drinking healthier can start from home – it doesn’t have to mean a trip to the grocery store. In fact you may find yourself getting more joy out of eating healthy food straight from a home garden. You get the chance to work outdoors and watch something sprout up from the ground to become ingredients for daily meals.

A vertical garden is a great place to start growing your own food. In fact they are ideal for homes with limited backyard (or front yard) space, and you can have all sorts of fun designing your own trellis.

What is a Vertical Garden?

It’s simple. Anything that you can grow upward, rather than having everything spread throughout the ground can be added to your vertical garden. They make for beautiful designs and help keep your food high off the ground – keeping your plants cleaner and safer from ground dwelling insects.

You will find that many plants will grow towards the sun and that providing platforms that help your plants do so can help with the overall health, quantity, and quality of the plants and the food that they produce. You can do this by:

  • Using homemade trellises made from wood
  • Using thick, long, and sturdy tree branches
  • Tying from the ground to the top of an object like the top of a shed, garage, or a pole

What Kind of Plants Can Grow on a Trellis?

Any type of plants that throw out “climber” vines will be able to grow up a trellis. This includes cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, grapes, watermelon, and of course, all types of pole beans.

Growing these types of plants will not only save you money during the harvest months but will benefit your health, and there are all sorts of ways that you can include them in your daily meals. The best part is that you can pick them off the vine and they are ready for eating – all they need is a quick rinse.
