Thank you for the article. I really enjoyed the information on the Kuna, in particular.

I would just like to add my voice to "dylan toymaker's" above, and perhaps express an opinion as well. I eat a lot of high quality chocolate that is produced by small companies and could be somewhere in-between Hersheys/Mars and the traditional Kuna method of hand-picking the beans and drying them in the sun. That chocolate tastes *much* different than "regular" chocolate chips or bars, and I think trusting your tastebuds on things like this is important. So my objection is the jump from Hersheys/Mars to Kuna cocoa without honoring all of the food artisans who are providing healthy products to the marketplace already (ie, Dragoba).

I will mention that I actually have a Ph.D. in Nutrition from UC Berkeley, so I do have an interest and a background in health and nutrition.

Cheers, Michelle

I run a small travel agency in panama (http://www.vacationscostarica.com/panama) and have spent a lot of time in the San Blas Islands. About 2 years ago, I had the pleasure of speaking at length with one island's medicine man. He showed me the various ways they consume cacao, the tonics he creates and the various "delivery methods" for ailments ranging from low energy to a hangover. The hangover trick involved squatting over a steaming pot of cacao, which I thought may be worse than the hangover :) One of the most amazing things about most Kuna is that they have bizarrely perfect teeth and their skin usually looks about 5-10 years younger than their actual age.
