In India, most people buy vegetables and fruits at big open-air markets where a lot of produce comes directly from the farms. So, even though some things like tomatoes are available throughout the year, during its peak growing season, it's plentiful and priced less, so it's not difficult to identify the seasons for the fruits and vegetables.

Eating seasonal is not only healthier and tastier, it often is also better for the environment because of the lower transportation and stocking costs. This saves a lot of energy and therefore CO2 emissions are reduced.

For more info on the environment and good, healthy foods, have a look at this Green News.

This is good information. I also agree with Kingsolver and I would like to add that eating vegetables in season also add a variety to our diet. I guess it was really meant that way, different foods in different seasons for a balanced diet all throughout the year.
